Student oboes are made of plastic, ABS resin, or some other composite material and have nickel-silver keys with nickel or silver-plating. Professional oboes are typically wooden with silver-plated or solid silver keys.
ABS Resin is a strong composite material ideal for reproducing the tonal qualities of more expensive wooden oboes while offering durability and ease of maintenance to student players.
Silver-plating on keys is considered preferable to nickel because the silver holds up better over time and looks shinier. Solid silver keys found on more expensive oboes are even better because with proper care, they will never lose their luster.
